iPr 002: The Proov – Battle Mode Album

The Proov, well known from their EP and album 'Traditions' (CMC2000), was very positively regarded in the Dutch press. Supported by Nike in 2000, the Proov made the most expensive video in the Duth pop history to their uplifting track ‘Feel the Heat’. Live, they performed at great festivals like Lowlands, Drum & Rhythm and North Sea Jazz and played upon all the great Dutch podia. The Proov single Nebula (Don’t let it fool ya) (Unexpected Records 2003) became single of the week and was nominated for best single of the year 2003 on VPRO radio 3. The same radio program nominated their other single Two Entropies for best single of the year 2004. Both tracks received a lot of media attention in the Netherlands. Now The Proov is spreading its word again via imPROOVment records. Their Battle Mode album reveals intriguing, explorative movements leaning on industrial sounds and organic vibes & thrills. CeeMajor & Gumshoe show their versatility musically and verbally without any hesitation. You can check their method in an intro, 13 tracks and 3 skits. This PROOV album is distributed by V2 & Rushhour and will be available on the 15th of march 2005. More info: www.theproov.com www.v2.nl www.rushhour.nl

The Proov is a hiphop formation from Holland, consisting of MC's CeeMajor and Gumshoe, along with DJ S-Dub. They use to make hiphop heavily influenced by jazz, funk and soul. Nowadays they are sounding more industrialized but still accompanied by lyrics that'll take a listen or two to fully understand. Strong beats and strong lyrics filled with self expression, rich metaphors and punchlines.
Why this name?
'Actual proof', a song by jazz legend Herbie Hancock, is an all time favorite tune from CeeMajor and DJ Leroy (one of the founding members but who isn't with the group anymore). Hence the name The Proov.
Do you play live?
The Proov plays live as much as they can, they love to play their music live in front of a crowd, anywhere. Special moments are North Sea Jazz 2001, Lowlands 2001, Praha (Roxy's) 2002...
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Music is now available without paying for it. You don't have to buy your cd's at a recordstore anymore, you can download almost everything from the internet. A good and a bad thing.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Depends. They can provide the money to get you in the studio, make a video, do proper promotion and distribution, so you don't have to pay for it yourself directly. It also saves you time and a shitload of stress. But indirectly, it depends on their percentages. On the record: Gumshoe, the manager/main initiator and mc, came up with his own lable.....imPROOVment records (distributed by rushhour)
Band History:
Check www.theproov.com, www,rushhour.nl. Or check the book 'Van Brooklyn naar Breukelen. 20 Jaar hiphop in Nederland' by Saul van Stapele.
Your influences?
A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep, The Pharcyde, Hieroglyfics, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, The Roots, Common, Mos Def, D'Angelo, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, James Brown, Kool & The Gang, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, etc.
Favorite spot?
Barcelona, Paris, London and Amsterdam. Haven't been to the States or Japan yet.
Equipment used:
Cee Major: I haven't got a clue 'cause electronics is a weak spot for me. I don't MAKE the music, I WRITE to the music. The only tools I use are a pen, a notepad and a good feeling for rhythm and music.
