Hi! I'm Phoenix J, a performing singer-songwriter, keyboardist and arranger-programmer.
Why this name?
Phoenix is my Chinese name and J is for Joan. Both are my birth names.
Do you play live?
Currently, I play mostly in the UK and Europe with Greenhaus from London. I love it... it feels great to see the audience moved and smile at what I've to give of myself in music. They're all special moments for me.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
I haven't got my solo albums on major distribution (yet), but to have them available worldwide on the internet is so refreshing. Whereas people can't get hold of my music before, now they can purchase them online from my website, CDbaby and as digital downloads.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I am still looking for distribution deals for my back catalogue and licensing for my third as yet unreleased materials. It doesn't matter if they're indie or major, as long as they're the right company for the job.
Band History:

PR Spiel:

Phoenix J (a translation of her Chinese name "Hong") a.k.a. Joan Martin, is a Singapore born, UK based performing singer-songwriter, keyboardist and arranger-programmer.

Her music have been likened to Madonna, Kate Bush and Bjork. Her debut Binary Star reached Top 40 in Asia, and her sophomore Junkk takes the "blend of Western pop, R&B dance and Asian influences she explored in Binary Star to another level. Lovers of alternative music, dance and even rock will also find plenty of tasty riffs and touches." (Zach's Trax). In live performances, she has a thrilling stage presence, complemented by spine-tingling and heartfelt vocals.

Phoenix has also been working with various bands and producers, including a recently signed project with rising London-based band Greenhaus, dubbed a cross between Massive Attack, Cocteau Twins and Portishead. After many successful gigs and co-writes with them, she is now their long-term frontperson and main vocalist/songwriter.
