The Evelyn Engine is an experimental electronic project with an emphasis on creating music that is both beautiful and energetic. With linear song structures and different time signatures, the music is something with which you can sit back and groove or rock out.
Why this name?
The Evelyn Engine was a band name that I created with a roommate during my freshman year of college. While he went on with his current band, I laid the foundations for the current incarnation of the Evelyn Engine by experimenting with different natural, instrumental and electronic sounds.
Do you play live?
The wild nature of the music proscribes a studio and digital environment. Although I do play live often, it is not this music that gets played.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Rampant downloading has put a bit of a stranglehold on music companies, meaning that they have to scale back on the number of artists. This means that record labels are only going to sign bands that they know will sell, whether it be through good music or payola tactics.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
If a record label had enough confidence in this music to sign me, I would have to seriously consider that as an option.
Your influences?
I love many different styles of music, but the key factor is the energy. If a techno song is derivative or has no soul, it's not going to move me. Equally, a song can have terrible production values, but if it's got that excitement in it, I'm going to dig it.
Equipment used:
I use manipulated samples and Fruity Loops Studio.
Anything else...?
Sobriety.
