Taiga Blues began as a side project for guitarist Carsten Mandt to explore musical interests in post rock, electronica and jazz that did not fit into the band context he was in at the time. Over time the side project grew, leading to releases on a number of netlabels such as Legoego.
In the second half of 2006, Carsten was eventually joined by guitarist/trumpet player Michael Gallagher and bassist Tim Craig and together they released their debut album Intricacies early in 2008 on the My Formica Table netlabel, showcasing the band's knack for seamlessly blending electronic and live instrumentation, composed and improvised elements, resulting in deceptively simple yet multi-layered, evocative music.
Following the release of Intricacies Tim unfortunately had to go on an extended sabbatical but he is due to return to the band in 2009.

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
As an alternative route of access to music, it can deliver unsigned or unknown bands to an audience that would otherwise never hear of those bands. As such, it enriches the traditional music industry landscape. But I don't think it will replace records or CDs any time soon. It definitely adds a valuable new mechanism though, especially for those artists who are not part of the established music industry framework. And, of course, for all those music lovers who are increasingly disenchanted with the garbage they're being fed by the established music industry.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Perhaps. But it's nothing we'd strive for and as such it's not likely to ever happen ...
Your influences?
Although coming from an 90's alternative rock background (think Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Melvins, Tool, Helmet), the main influences that are evident in taiga blues now are more along the lines of post rock bands like Tortoise or Godspeed You Black Emperor, and electronic acts like Boards of Canada, Four Tet or To Rococo Rot. And increasingly film music and jazz, particularly late 60s and 70s stuff ...
