Band/artist history
Growing up in and around the St James community in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, The Spotrushaz found solace from their worldly troubles in the embrace of the universal hip-hop art-form. Stranded on a tropical island as hip-hop grew in popularity and influence around the globe The Rushaz began to manifest their love and appreciation for hip-hop amongst their peers. It began with a "rap-plate" for a local sound-system. When it was used to 'kill-a-rival-sound' during a 'clash', no one believed that the voices on the "Whoa" instrumental were local and so the soundman (“Madman Yohann” Seaton of SEL Construction) decided to give these local MCs some quality time at his home-studio. With no original beats available, the Spotrushaz opted to spit their "controversial lyrics" over the most popular instrumentals at the time (mix-tape style). All three of their initial offerings: "Blaze the Dutch", "Bootycalls" and "We Got That" garnered significant airplay on local radio stations and earned them their first performance at The Tunnel nightclub in Chaguanas. It was 1998 and hip-hop was not yet mainstream and was still considered by many detractors to be "an American art-form that had no place in sweet Trinidad & Tobago", but that didn't stop the 'Rushaz from hopping on every available stage. Brazenly, they hit clubs, casinos and house-parties galore, infecting the masses with their unique slang, dress-codes and hip-hop temperament. Rapidly gaining respect among their peers, The Rushaz recorded two singles with two-time Ragga-Soca Monarch and 2004 & 2005 Soca Monarch, Bunji Garlin entitled "Bloodseed", and “In The Air (remix)”. In August 2000, they were chosen to open 98.9 YES FM's biggest indoor concert, which featured Jamaican deejay, Sizzla and hip-hop icons, Naughty By Nature. SUBSEQUENTLY, The Spotrushaz have:  Hosted and promoted numerous hip-hop events; including a weekly gathering at The Base nightclub throughout the 'Summer' (July/August vacation) of 2001.  Been selected to showcase their talents for foreign recording executives at the Decibel Music Showcase in June 2001 and 2002.  Recorded and released three original singles to local and regional radio stations between May-November, 2002.  Opened for Beat Club Recording artiste, Ms Jade at the 'Fire on The Beach' event in June, 2002.  Performed as a guest act on two episodes of the TV 6 television talent-search program, Soundstage between July-August, 2002.  Performed on Store Bay Beach in Tobago for the annual Emanci-Fest celebration in August, 2002.  Opened for dancehall superstar, Sean Paul in October, 2002.  Opened for Def Jam South Recording Artiste, Ludacris in December, 2002  Recorded and released three more singles in 2003; including the smash hit collaboration with Jamaican Deejays, Mega Banton and Ricky General,  “True Soldierz” for which they also filmed a video; styled and directed by BET stylist, Rick Davy and videographer, John Deloney.  Performed as a guest act on one episode of the TV6 television talent-search program, Soundstage in August, 2003.  Performed at The Lair Nightclub in Barataria and Club Platinum during the July/August vacation, 2003.  Performed at the Golden Star Resort in Tobago and Club Fantasia in Grenada during October, 2003  Performed at the opening of the Diver’s Den VIP Lounge in Tobago in October, 2003  Performed at the Port of Spain General Hospital for the nurses’ annual Christmas concert in December, 2003.  Performed at the Tsunami Beach Club for Pelau Promotions’ “No Cliché” event on April 23, 2004  Performed at Movie Towne Cinemaplex for the special premier of Harry Potter 3: The Prisoner of Azkaban; as hosted by the Express Children’s Fund on June 15, 2004  Performed at the second annual Heroes Convention hosted by the Heroes Foundation at the Crowne Plaza Ballroom on July 31 and August 1, 2004.  Performed at the St Margaret’s Government Primary School fund-raising bazaar in September.  Opened for hip-hop icons, Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh and veterans, Shannon and Lloyd E Stef at the “Passion of Dance” event on October 16, 2004  Performed alongside a star-studded cast of local and regional acts, including dancehall superstars, Bounty Killer and Elephant Man at the Heart of The Music benefit concert on October 31, 2004.  Performed at Holy Name Convent’s annual Christmas bazaar on November 6.  Appeared and performed on CCN TV6’s “Christmas Lime” special, which aired on December 24, 2004.  Appeared and performed on CCN TV6’s live Carnival program, “On De Promenade with Rachel Price” in January, 2005.  Appeared and performed on Gayelle: The Channel’s pre-recorded Carnival feature, “Nikki on the Promenade” in January, 2005.  Produced and released their second compilation cd entitled “The 10-Piece” in February, 2005  Appeared and performed at various events while completing their debut album and their third video. In 2004, The Spotrushaz also filmed and directed their own video for an underground single entitled “Triniman”, which was launched at The Outback Lounge and Grill on July 28. This event was the group’s third major enterprise for 2004, having successfully hosted a Sports Day and MC Battle on March 27 and a fund-raising barbeque on May10. “Taking into consideration recent developments in the entertainment industry, we had the foresight to conceptualize, direct and produce our own music video prior to releasing the song itself; thereby following progressively on the heels of our debut video, ‘True Soldierz,” said Group Leader, BDangerous. The Spotrushaz itinerary for the rest of 2005 includes: The production of at least two more videos and the subsequent release of the songs attached to local, regional and international media. The production and subsequent release of a DVD to chronicle our activities for the year and provide a new perspective on the ups and downs of the industry. The production and release of another album. Hosting two more community-based events. Establishing a base for the local hip-hop community. The mission is clear The Spotrushaz are ready! We gonna make it! and it’s About F*@K!? Time! *ALBUM COMING SOON!*
