Hello and welcome! "Symphonic Band Performances" is a compilation of recordings from several high school and college bands that I played in including the TMEA (Texas) All State Band, the TMEA Region X All Region Band, the Interlochen Arts Academy National Music Camp, the Cal Poly Tech Band, San Luis Obispo, the USAF Golden West Band, and recordings from my h.s. band, Beaumont H.S. and a few band recordings that were passed down to me. Also included are various All State groups and college and university bands. I participated and played in the large majority of these recordings. There are no professional recordings here and every recording is Public Domain. Most are available for free download. Each song has been converted from the original analog or digital source and edited with Audacity or Dak software. In the majority of these recordings, I play the tenor sax or alto sax, b flat or e flat clarinet, or directing. I was drum major for 2 years in high school, I have a BA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I studied music ed, composition and theory. I had about 500 more recordings I was planning to digitize and upload, but this past Nov. 20th, my home was completely destroyed by fire, and all the contents, including all my music and instruments. So, this is it. Please feel free to post a comment here or on my member page. If you like, please become a fan by clicking "I'm a fan" below.
Band/artist history
The Interlochen Arts Academy National Music Camp is an annual summer camp for approximately 2,000 students ages 8 to 18. It was founded in 1928 by the late Dr. Joseph E. Maddy . Students participate in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, and creative writing. Camp admission is competitive, and auditions are required. I attended in grades 10 and 11. The TMEA (Texas) All State Bands had 130 members selected each year. I was All State my soph., junior and senior years. The band included all UIL classifications. Today there are 5 All State Bands in Texas, one for each classification. Concerts were held at the annual TMEA clinic, convention, and concerts in February. To be selected for All State, we first auditioned for the All Region Band. Everyone was given three selections to play. Students ranked highest in the All Region Band went to audition at All Area tryouts. A final audition was held among the top All-Area musicians to decide membership in the All-State band. Student musicians selected for the All-State band attended the annual TMEA convention and participated in a performance clinic and concert. The Region X All Region Band was in S.E. Texas. This included high school students from Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, and several smaller towns. The region now includes Baytown. Students ranked highest in the All Region Band went to Area tryouts. The French H.S. Band won Sweepstakes Awards my soph., jr. and sr. years. Our director was Mr. Bill Driskell. FHS competed in Class 4A. I was Drum Major my junior and senior years. The school was eventually closed and consolidated and moved to what is now Beaumont Central H.S. Unfortunately, Beaumont ISD did not archive the band's videos and audio. This is another reason I decided to upload these recordings. The Cal Poly Tech Band, San Luis Obispo, was and still is under the direction of Mr. William V. Johnson, who will be retiring shortly. The 504th Air Force Band of the Golden Gate was stationed at Travis Air Force Base, California.
Your musical influences
Dr. Joseph Carlucci, Conductor of the Beaumont Symphony, and Mr. Bill Driskell, French H.S. Band Director. I took private lessons in Jr. High from Mr. Driskell and four years with Dr. Carlucci until college.
What equipment do you use?
"EZ Vinyl Converter" to convert tape Recordings to PC. "Audacity" Software for noise removal. "DAK" Software for noise and hiss reduction, and "DAK Mp3 and Wave Editor".
Anything else?
Congratulations to the Longview, Texas H.S. Marching Band. They received Division 1 (Superior) at the annual UIL Region 21 Marching Contest in October, FOR THE 69TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR! They received Division 1's from each of the three adjudicators. Longview is one of the 100 military high school marching bands left in Texas.
