Larry Brick, born September 7th 1953 in Marion Arkansas took interest in playing guitar at a young age. He remembers learning his very first guitar licks from local African American blues players. Brick says,”the men would spend their afternoons on their humble front porches deep in the southern cotton fields picking guitars”. Memphis music was a big influence also, being only 20 minutes away from Beale St., “we spent many weekends observing musicians from the doorways of the clubs”. Graduating from Marion High School in 1972 Larry attended U of A in Fayetteville where he studied business. He then moved to Bella Vista, CO where he began working five nights a week at a local club. From there, he went to southern Florida. It was in Florida where Larry was invited to begin playing Gospel Music in churches. That eventually led to a record contract with a Christian label, Maranatha Records (now called Maranatha Music). Larry traveled to the west coast to bring music to Calvary and Vineyard Chapels, the first of the “Christian Hippie movements” started by Chuck Smith, founder of Calvary Chapel. Some of his original songs such as “I Will Wait and Heart Of Gold” along with about twenty others have been published and are still being sung in churches today. Rachel Fields, born Dec 16th 1974 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas into a musical family. By way of her mother, she started attending her birth fathers concerts while in the womb. He sang the blues and rock-n-roll with his band Johnny Jet and The Rockin’ ‘88’s. Before she could walk her grandfather, Mr. Scoggins, an infamous Arkansas architect, was teaching her all about Dizzy Gillespie and Lawrence Welk. Rachel recalls hearing her caretaker, Ms. Marcella, singing Gospel and African American Traditional music to her at 2 and 3 years old. Her Mother made sure she got her fill of The Beatles and the 60’s influence. Rachel’s nephew is the famous Arkansas singer / songwriter Mike “Burger” Scoggins. Fields adopted dad, Cecil Sutterfields made sure she got an ear full of Jimmy Buffet, Bluegrass, and Country growing up. Rachel started playing flute at age eleven in school and left home at 16 for a private school in Vicksburg, Mississippi where she studied classical voice and flute. Rachel then moved to NYC where she studied musical theater, acting, and dance at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and sang part time on Spirit Cruise Ships. In the late 90’s while singing for a traveling festival she began honing her songwriting skills by improvising and singing blues, jazz, and rock style music with traveling jam bands as well as opening up for groups such as The Jerry Garcia Band, Government Mule and Merl Saunders and The Rainforest Band. Rachel attended a 6 week spring tour with The Jerry Garcia Band in 1997 singing. After the tour ended Rachel moved to CA where she continued songwriting, performing, and recording with members of various west coast bands such as, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Starship, Jerry Garcia Band. The recordings began a west coast tour with a collaboration called "Big Folk". Jude Gold, guitar player and Big Folk member then gave Ms. Sutterfield her stage name, “Rachel Fields”. Rachel became pregnant with her first child and moved back to Arkansas. Later Rachel spent some time writing with a small and private Nashville company on Music Row. After having her songs recorded by a few different Nashville artists she went on to pursue her solo career. Rachel gave birth to twins in 2003. In 2006 Fields moved to Eureka Springs, AR where she found she, as now a new single mother, could make a living singing while raising three children. Rachel began singing as early as three, entertaining her family. “I knew I wanted to sing for people my whole life.” “That’s all I’ve ever done and all I want to do.” Rachel has sung in venues of all sorts, churches to The Monterey Blues Festival running the Country from New York City to San Francisco and everywhere in between. 1. Larry and Rachel, now married, thus The Brick Fields Band was born. They have had the privilege of joining some national and internationally well known performers along the way. This couple’s original music is rooted deeply in, The Delta Blues, Gospel, Folk and Roots music. Their combinations can accommodate venues from an intimate relaxed setting with the acoustic duo to a full band experience. This husband and wife team with Larry’s anointed guitar sound and back vocals along with Rachel’s, soulful voice, flute, and rhythm guitar continue to touch their audiences deeply. Brick Fields Music has been called an “Unleashed cleansing of the soul” by Nashville Blues Society. Doug Hill of the Norman, OK Transcript called Brick Fields album "Gospel Blue" “A worshipful House of Blues with a steeple on top!” And New Classic Music for Tomorrow said, “Brick Fields is by far the most soulful artist I’ve heard in years!”. You can read more national and international reviews at their website. Brick Fields music can be heard on blues, gospel, folk, and even children’s radio nationally and internationally. The State of Arkansas has produced a self-sufficient amount of musical treasures over the years and some of them are still a best-kept secret. The Brick Fields Band is both a tradition-rich and forward thinking natural progression of that lineage. But with their work ethic and deep-rooted talent, the fences we have around this state will no longer be able to contain them. Brick Fields is an Arkansas Treasure and must be seen.
