VERSE 1
I left her crying on the emerald isle,
As I sailed away from Galway Bay,
Tales of fortune drove me wild,
Now in Shanghai, cold and gray,
Four damp walls and two years to pay.
CHORUS 1
Live for the promise of Ireland,
With each scratch on the wall,
As the tears flood my heart,
I cry out…Oh Donegal!
VERSE 2
We planned to wed on that yonder glen,
Build a house with rocks by the sea,
Now my tired ravaged hands,
Hold no longer broken dreams,
Now they grasp all kinds of schemes.
Repeat Chorus
BRIDGE
My only crime,
Was to speak out free,
Truth was my weakness,
My tongue disagreed.
CHORUS 2
Live for the promise of Ireland,
Far away on the walls,
She endures in solitude,
I cry out…oh Donegal!
CHORUS 1
Live for the promise of Ireland,
With each scratch on the wall,
As the tears flood my heart,
I cry out…oh Donegal!
