Band History:
Abstrakt Intellekt are a pair of twenty something emcees that go by the names of Mike King and DamoSport. Both hailing from downriver, (Dearborn Heights and Taylor) these two individuals are seeking to put a name of the faceless region of "outer Detroit". Dubbing the region "Area 51"...DamoSport explained to me the best way he thought possible...
"Area 51 is an affectionate term that we've deemed for our home-land, somewhere between the rural country side and the industrial downtown area lies a section of the city that gets passed over. Were the "bermuda-triangle" of Detroit....what goes on here, stays here. Most residents are multi-generation of the same area. To leave the area is unheard of"
Abstrakt Intellekt was formed in 1999, when DamoSport and Mike King met through a mutual friend Bobby Knox. DamoSport was hard at work on his ill-fated first album "Illmatterz4bystanderz"...
"the album just never got legs, i struggled non-stop to secure the financing to release this album properly...i released a few hundred copies hand to hand, but by the time i recouped enough dough, the album was just dated"
As frustrating as that time was, little did he know one of his guest apperances will be the other half of the most successful downriver hip hop group ever.
Mike King and Damo collaberated on the very first version of "that sh*t", on illmatterz4bystanderz....only to re-release that track on their debut album First Contact.
Mike King: " yeah, i wasn't really looking to form a group at that time, but it just clicked...a chemistry that powerful is hard to deny"
Mike King is a local hip hop veteran, under the alias "The Raven"...he created a stir unlike anyone else before him. The early Raven sessions are a hot commodity. Raven and super-producer Mike E. Clark worked for many years trying to craft the perfect "Raven" sound. But like everything else, storys run their course, and before the album was completed...the Raven transformed into Mike King. Mike King spent many years on the underground battle scene, gaining respect from on lookers and competitors alike.
A 2000 apperance on DJ K-nice's Blacklisted gained the exposure that Mike King needed to finally jump into the spot-light. The release party of Blacklisted (with Kid Capri at St. Andrews) was showcasing all the talent featured on the cd. And who did Mike King call to back him up.....thats right, DamoSport.
DamoSport: "yeah, i was just trying to do whatever i could, so when the call came...i was like.....yo, im with it"
After a high octane show...........the pair realized something....
A.I: " We really have something special as a group, its time to take things seriously"
And get to work they did......
putting together 4 songs, they reached out and touched an old friend of the Raven....Mike E. Clark(I.C.P, Kid Rock, Esham). MEC seen something in the duo, and immediatly signed them to a Contract.
First Contact was released in 2003 to a slumping music economy. Most mom and pop stores were closing, and securing distribution was difficult, so the duo took it upon themselves and went directly to the streets.
Playing a sold-out record release partyat Little Dublin's in Taylor, Mi. A.I rode the wave of momentum to a state wide show on-slaught...from playing The Blind Pig with Paradime and King Gordy to Feb.22's SOLD OUT Trolley Stop show, A.I has played everywhere the beer was flowing and people were showing.
Abstrakt Intellekt has withstood the test of time, and are now hard at work on their sophmore follow-up cd "Fear and Loathing in Detroit". Due out sometime this summer, A.I will be announcing their plans for record release party this spring. Stop by www.abstraktintellekt.com for more details as they become available.
