Apell is Anthony Pell an Australian, Melbourne based musician creating unique electronic music encompassing styles as diverse as rock, jazz, funk & dub. Apell has been internationally acclaimed as “a tour de force with a creative mind who lives in a world of his own” - Marty Peters RECORDING (Magazine US)
Why this name?
A is for Anthony & Pell is my last name. It actually came about from my PC logon. The concept behind the name leads to being unable to spell the fruit let alone know what it is - thus the Orange theme!
Do you play live?
Yes. Apell live is done through using a laptop running Ableton Live with samples and beats. My live bass guitar playing is sampled and manuipulated through Ableton live to build new and improvised tracks.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Its made it easier for bands to get their music displayed. However there is so much of it that the freedom it allows becomes swamped in the vast numbers of bands/artists.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes, but only on terms that I would agree to financially & artistically.
Band History:
In 1999 Apell was created to produce music that couldn't be created in a regular band. Apell’s production techniques are inspired by a diverse range of musical influences from rock (U2, Radiohead, King Crimson, Frank Zappa & Jimi Hendrix) to jazz (John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Weather Report & John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra) and electronic (Massive Attack, Squarepusher, Unkle & Amon Tobin).

Apell’s musical objective is to create innovative & entertaining music that is not just a carbon copy of other electronic music.

Apell has received rave reviews internationally and has been described as “a crazy eccentric genius.” – (Stillborn Extreme Music Zine - Italy)
Your influences?
The music created by Apell is influenced by many musical styles & artists not necessarily limited to electronic music. From an initial rock background artists that have musically influenced Apell include U2, Radiohead, King Crimson, Frank Zappa & Jimi Hendrix. The jazz influence in Apell can be traced back to innovative people like John Coltrane, Miles Davis & John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. The major electronic influences on the Apell sound include people such as Massive Attack, Squarepusher, Unkle & Groove Armada. These artists’ use of guitars, basses & other instruments in an electronic context have inspired Apell & the studio techniques used to create his music. The musical objective of Apell is to create innovative & interesting electronic based music to engage & entertain the listener beyond just creating a carbon copy of what already exists in electronic music.
Favorite spot?
Melbourne, because it is meant to be the most livable city on the planet.
