It enables an artist to access a wider audience without going through official channels like record labels.

Unlikely.
Band History:
I have been a writer of fiction since 1984. In 1994 S.B. Reda and I began work on a series of video films, resulting in “Look at My Screen”, a 2-hour video compilation. After forming Discord Aggregate in 1996, together with S.B. Reda and Pamela Zero, I began my invasion into music, visual art, and web art. My oeuvre currently includes 3 novels (+ 2 written in collaboration with S.B. Reda), a short stories and poetry collection, an illustrated poetry book, 3 CDs created as part of Discord Aggregate, and a host of visual works and conceptual web projects.

The CD is based on my illustrated book "Not From Around Now (Poetry for a Small Choir)" (http://www.discord-aggregate.com/literature/amolotkov/notfrom.htm). This ambitious project involves 17 musicians.
