Cannibalistic cacophony! Wrench's 1988 bio stated: "We throb in darkness, exude hallucinogens." True words, indeed, to describe their morose bass riffage, constrictor-punk beats, dense webs of ominous guitar, and atop it all, the capering insanity of a vocal gnome. Rhythms lurch and sway, notes sear staccato, as the cackling voice crescendoes to infinity.
Band History:
Wrench began some time during 1987, centered around the rhythm section of bassist Chris Mehl and drummer Jim Moffitt. The original guitar player drifted away, and by December 1987, guitarist Greg Fasolino (formerly of The Oppressed, Outcry, The Cave, The Naked and the Dead, Burning Rome, Rawhead, Goatblood Sacrifice, and Pump) had stepped in. The trio soon began fermenting a potent brew of crunching, abrasive, morbid noise in Fasolino's rehearsal space in Queens, NY, and were eventually joined by caterwauling "screech-owl" singer Craig Colligan, who hailed from Long Island.
Divergent priorities caused Fasolino's departure from the group in early spring of '88. Reconciling with Dave, the previous Wrench guitar player, Mehl, Moffitt, and Colligan managed several gigs in NYC and colleges before finally petering out later that spring.
Singer Craig Colligan has been a member of NYC industrial-noise band Teenmilk (aka Teen Milk, aka 5 Techniques) since the early 1990s. They have released one single on Cacophone Records ("Student-Athlete" b/w "Sawed Off") and the track "Erotic Gun Head" on the compilation "UltraSwank."
Bassist Mehl's later exploits remain unknown.
Wrench drummer Jim Moffitt ended up joining notorious NYC anarchic noise band Missing Foundation, and toured Europe with them. He was last known to be drumming for War Hippies.
Greg Fasolino later played with They Eat Their Gods, Lusting for the Cheetah, Sea of Fur, The Sea Beasts, The Deno Blues Gang, and a 2002 Naked and the Dead reunion. He is currently working on new post-punk band Bell Hollow with former Naked and the Dead bassist Christopher Bollman, and moonlights in The Green Monster Band.
